Tim Thomas – Permian Basketball

The Panthers’ basketball program enters its sixth season under head coach Tim Thomas.

tim thomasCoach Thomas came to Permian High School in 2015.  He has led the Panthers to five straight playoff appearances and three District Champion titles.  Mojo made back-to-back trips to the Region Semifinals for the first time in 25 years. In 2017-18, his guidance resulted in the basketball program recording a 31-4 mark, which stands as best record and most wins in a single season.

Prior to Permian, Thomas coached at Fort Bend Hightower in 2014 with a playoff appearance.  He has had coaching stints at Cedar Hill (four years – four playoff runs), Temple (two years and made it to the Regional Championship), Lubbock Estacado (six years – five District titles, four Regionals, and a State tournament appearance), and Palo Duro (three years and scoring Amarillo’s first ever #1 state ranking).

Prior to district or the state playoffs last year, Thomas collected his 500th win as a head coach during the Caprock Classic tournament.  He has 33 years of coaching experience, which includes 21 years as a head coach, 10 years as a college assistant, and two seasons at Wayland Baptist University. He also served as a public school administrator for two years.  Thomas got his Undergraduate degree at Wayland Baptist.  He earned his Masters of Education at Texas Tech.

His coaching resume includes:
– Ten District Championships
– Texas 6A TABC Coach of the Year (2010)
– Texas 6A TABC Outstanding Coach of the Year Finalist (2018)
– Inducted into Athletic Hall of Fame – Wayland Baptist University (2003)
– Ten Time District Coach of the Year
– Nine State Playoff Regional Tournament Appearances (eight Final 16 / four Final 8)

Coming off of back-to-back-to-back District Championships, and State Playoffs Top 16 Regional Tournament appearances for the first time in school history, the 2020-21 season will be a challenge to follow for this year’s team. According to Thomas (mentor of the Mojo Machine), the keys to success will be to have a great pre-season, keep everyone healthy, academically successful, and together. “We will, as always rely on – teamwork, proper attitude, great hustle, team defense, and execution.”
