Boys Split Caprock Classic

Lubbock, TX – The Permian boys basketball team finished the 62nd annual Caprock Classic winning two games and losing two over the three-day tournament held December 29-31.

ben saldivar The Panthers opened the tournament with a 78-48 win over Wichita Falls Riders.  Ben Saldivar led Mojo with 24 points to lead all scorers on Wednesday. Permian extended a 32-22 halftime lead by exploding with 29 third quarter points – 10 of those from the sophomore guard.

Senior Cedric Baty led the trey charge in the third stanza.  Mojo tacked on multiple 3-pointers to essentially put the game out of reach with a 61-30 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Black Cats advanced in the double elimination tourney with another victory, this time beating Midland Christian by a 73-42 decision to begin Thursday morning’s festivities.  The Mojo defense held the Mustangs to single-digit scoring in two of the four quarters of play.

Saldivar continued with the hot hand by scoring 18 points, while junior Tremayne Baty backed him up with 14 of his own.

In the Thursday evening contest, Permian ran into North Richland Hills Richland.  The state-ranked 5A metroplex team came out firing on all cylinders to prove why they are currently ranked #15 in Texas.  Costly fouls became a nemesis for the Panthers as Richland began to buffer a lead from the free throw line alone.

The Royals led through each of the first three quarters to have the Black Cats trail 55-38 as the fourth quarter began.  Permian stayed resilient and began to cut into the deficit throughout the final period.  Mojo actually outscored Richland 22-14 in the final eight minutes, but was unable to get any closer than a nine-point deficit in the 69-60 quarterfinal loss.

The Panthers failed to overcome untimely turnovers in the Friday morning meeting to fall 72-56 to Lubbock Trinity Christian.  After taking a 19-11 first quarter lead, the Black Cats watched Trinity even the score right before the half and enjoy a 32-29 advantage at the intermission.  The second half continued to see turnovers and a sluggish Permian offense.

The Panthers did end on a positive note as the shooting percentage improved at the free throw line, making 10-of-13 in the final game.  Saldivar emerged as a consistent offensive weapon, leading in scoring all four games with a combined 82 points.  The trip ended with Mojo splitting the four tourney games to close out the 2021 basketball slate.

The Panthers will resume district play on Tuesday, January 4 at the Permian Fieldhouse when they host Midland High to kick-off the new year.  The JV will play at 6:00 p.m. and the Varsity will follow at 7:30 p.m.
