Mojo Tops Frenship In Catfight

Wolfforth, TX – After falling behind 35-14 at the half, Permian’s football team fought back to claim a 42-41 decision over Frenship at Peoples Bank Stadium.  Mojo scored two late unanswered touchdowns to hand the Tigers the District 2-6A loss.

Turnovers and penalties marred what was otherwise a vicious catfight that pitted Frenship’s aerial assault versus Mojo’s running game and defense.  In the end, a blocked extra point in the third quarter proved to be the difference.  The two teams produced over 900 yards of offense, while watching yellow laundry continually cover the turf.  A total of 23 penalties were called throughout the contest.

Frenship jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead, courtesy of a six-yard TD run, an onside kick, and a 57-yard touchdown pass.  The Panthers were able to cut into the deficit midway in the opening quarter on a 7-play, 52-yard drive that was capped with a 12-yard TD run by Juzstyce Lara.  The Tigers added another score to possess a 21-7 first quarter advantage.

Quarterback Rodney Hall made it a one-score ball game on the first play of the second quarter.  Hall broke free for a 24-yard TD run for Permian to trail 21-14.  The Tigers responded with a 34-yard touchdown strike to push the difference back to two scores.  The two teams traded punts, with the latter getting bobbled on the return. Frenship would convert that miscue into another touchdown six plays later for a 35-14 lead.

The Black Cats would turn the momentum to the visitor’s side of the field in the second half.  Permian took the opening drive to the house with Lara capping the drive.  After forcing a three-and-out, the Panthers collected a 5-play, 57-yard effort to pull to within seven.  On the following first play from scrimmage, the Tigers unleashed a 71-yard TD catch-and-run.  The point after attempt was blocked, giving Frenship a 41-28 advantage.

The Mojo mystique took over from there.  It would take all of six plays for Permian to march the ball down the field and score to only trail by six points to close out the third quarter.

The Panthers held the Tigers to one first down before bowing up to stop a fourth down attempt near midfield early in the fourth stanza.  Staying with the ground game, Permian methodically moved the ball 57 yards and into the endzone to knot the contest at 41-41.  Tate Terry’s extra point gave the Black Cats their first lead of the game with 6:33 to play.

Frenship still had hopes of setting up another touchdown or field goal to regain the lead.  Nine plays into the drive (with valuable minutes ticking off of the clock), the Tigers faced a fourth-and-19 at the Mojo 37.  An incomplete pass would turn the ball over on downs.  The Panthers would simply run out the clock for the 42-41 victory.

Permian (2-1, 7-1) will be back on the road again next week as the Mojo Road Show travels to San Angelo to battle the Bobcats.  Central (2-1, 5-3) suffered a 56-29 road loss to Midland Legacy earlier tonight.
