Mojo Machine Continues To Roll

Lubbock, TX – With wins over Lubbock High and Lewisville iSchool, Permian’s boys basketball team will defend its Caprock Classic tournament title on Saturday night.  Shy Stephens-Deary led the Panthers to a 64-40 victory over the Cougars in The Pit at Wolfforth Frenship.

caprock classicAfter blasting Lubbock 82-19 in the morning, the Mojo Machine took care of business in the evening game as well.  Stephens-Deary caught fire with 12 points in the third quarter to propel the Panthers past the disadvantaged Metroplex team.

Permian played a solid game of defense, and limited the Cougars to six points in the first quarter.  Keyonta Johnson matched that six points by himself as he led the Panthers to a quick 14-6 first quarter lead.

The Black Cats utilized a more ball-controlled second period.  Permian was able to spread the ball around with Stephens-Deary, Nakavieon White, Jase Taylor, and DJ Johnson each adding a basket, and JJ Vizcaino nailing a three-pointer.  The Cougars managed to keep pace, but still trailed 27-21 at the intermission.

Stephens-Deary’s 12 points in the third quarter was backed up with four more from White and and three from Vizcaino.  The Mojo Machine defense put the clamps on any iSchool efforts in closing the gap.  In fact, the Cougars were held to a mere four points from a goal and two free throws.  As time expired on the third frame, Permian sat on a 46-25 lead.

The Panthers put together a solid fourth quarter without any drop in energy.  Similar to the second period, Mojo had seven shooters involved to rack up another 18 points.  Jalyn and Jared Richardson combined for 15 points for the Cougars, but it wouldn’t be enough to de-thrown Permian from a trip back to the ‘Ship’.

Stephens-Deary led all game scorers with 21 points.  Permian will play Midland Christian for the tournament championship Saturday at 9:00 p.m. at the Rip Griffin Center at Lubbock Christian University.  The Panthers defeated Lubbock Monterey 56-50 last year to win the tourney title.
