Mojo Girls Basketball Downs Monahans

ODESSA, TX – The Permian girls basketball team finished 2019 in the win column.  Utilizing a strong defense, Mojo disposed of Monahans 55-39 at the PHS Fieldhouse on Tuesday afternoon.

savageThe Lady Panthers jumped out to an impressive 20-9 first quarter lead.  From there, Monahans was unable to make up the difference the remainder of the game.  Jae Savage and Daysia Christian combined for 12 of the first 20 points for Permian.  Zae Tiner, Nodia Cooper, Karen Guzman, and Ahna Alvarado each added a bucket.

Coach Macee Lane recognized the positive, “Wins like today are a huge confidence booster moving into our final game before district starts.  The girls have been working hard and preparing for the tough road that lies ahead.  We look to start the new year off Friday on a high note.”

Natalie Baeza, Christian, and Alvarado had shots find the cylinder in the second frame, and Cooper made both of her free throws for Permian’s eight points.  Monahans added nine, but Mojo took a 28-18 halftime lead.

Savage lit it up in the third stanza, nailing eight of the Lady Panther’s 12 points in the quarter.  Monahans made a couple of three’s, but the Permian defense kept the visitors in check.  Cooper and Christian again added goals to send the game into the fourth quarter with a 40-28 Mojo lead.  Savage and Baeza led the scoring in the final frame for the 59-33 winning decision.

Coach Lane pointed out today’s performance was a personal best for Savage.  “Jae stepped up for us big time.  She has been putting in the work in practice and it paid off.  It’s good to see kids get rewarded for hard work.”

Savage led all scorers with a game-high 18 points, while Christian finished the day with 11.  Sophomore Alvarado turned in another solid performance with three baskets and a free throw.  Cooper and Baeza each contributed six points in the winning effort.
