Mojo Machine Opens Season With Win

Lubbock, TX – The Mojo Machine got off to a positive start to begin the 2020-21 season, disposing of host Lubbock High 71-36 on Saturday afternoon.  The road victory for Permian featured an offensive assault by Tremaine Baty, Race Herr, Dreyce Locke, and Kysan Moreno.

tim thomasIt became evident early that the Panthers will look to once again establish a stingy defense as a core strength, a trademark of teams mentored by head coach Tim Thomas.  In today’s non-district contest, the Black Cats limited the Westerners to 17 points in the first half, and 19 in the second.

Permian opened the game holding Lubbock to six points, while turnovers were transitioned into baskets on the other end of the court.  A 14-6 first quarter lead was extended in the second stanza. Baty and Herr accounted for 16 of 25 points the Panthers added to take a 39-17 lead into intermission.

The Mojo Machine kept the throttle down and continued to manipulate the tempo in the third period.  Permian pushed the deficit another 10 points to sit on a 54-22 lead by quarter’s end.  The game’s hosts had their best quarter in the fourth, dropping a couple of 3-balls and scoring 14 points. Unfortunately for Lubbock, PHS added 17 of its own to claim a 71-36 road win.

The Panthers doubled the Westerners’ offensive output, knocking down 25 baskets to their 12.  Permian also bettered Lubbock High shooting free throws.  Mojo went 11-for-16 from the line, with LHS going 9-for-16.  Baty led all scorers with 18 points, and Herr followed with 15.  Locke made all five of his free throws and turned in a 12-point afternoon. Moreno scored 11 points in the winning effort.

The season home opener is Friday, November 20 against Lubbock Monterey.  The non-district meeting is slated for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the Permian Fieldhouse.
