Lubbock, TX – In a meeting between former District 2-6A rivals, Permian used a strong defense to dispose of Amarillo Tascosa in a 53-28 decision at Trinity Christian High School in Lubbock on Saturday.
The high-octane Mojo Machine struggled somewhat in the early going. The Rebels took full advantage of the miscues and led after the first eight minutes by a 11-9 edge, including making three perimeter three’s. Luckily for the Panthers, their trademark stout defense kept things in order. As a result, Tascosa was held to single-digit scoring in the second, third, and fourth quarters.
Offensively, the Panthers were able to settle in and increase their scoring production as the game progressed. Junior forward Calvieone Calicutt dropped in a couple of buckets to lead the Mojo charge in the second frame. Holding Tascosa to a single basket, Permian would establish a 19-13 advantage at the break and would never relinquish that lead.
The Mojo Machine looked more itself in the second half, racking up 18 points in the third period and 16 in the fourth. Sophomores Tremayne Baty and Race Herr led the Permian assault in the third, taking turns finding the cylinder. Herr nailed a statement three-ball as time drained off the clock to end the quarter with the Black Cats up 37-21.
Scoring was distributed more evenly for Mojo in the final eight minutes with seven different Panthers recording a made basket. Tremayne Baty finished with a game-high 10 points. Herr followed with nine points, while Cedric Baty added another eight for the 53-28 win.
Permian, now 4-0 for the season, will make a return trip to the Hub City next Tuesday, December 1 for a rematch with Lubbock Monterey. The Panthers utilized a fourth quarter rally to win the first meeting 56-47 in the home opener at the PHS Fieldhouse. The non-district clash is slated for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off in the Plainsmen gymnasium.
