Abilene, TX – The Mojo Machine picked two more non-district victories this weekend, hosting Lubbock Monterey on Friday and meeting Red Oak halfway on Saturday. Permian’s boys basketball team is now 3-0 for the season.
In Friday’s home opener for the Panthers, a stingy defense gave Mojo full control of the final eight minutes against Monterey. Trailing 47-37 after three quarters, the Mojo Machine squelched the Plainsmen to a fourth quarter goose egg while adding 19 to claim a 56-47 win in the Permian Fieldhouse.
After battling through a close first quarter, Monterey found a rhythm and took advantage of Permian miscues to build a nine point edge at the intermission. The Panthers had trouble knocking down free throws and were nine for 20 from the line. The Plainsmen were one-for-two.
Led by Zay Pierce and Tremayne Baty, the Mojo Machine began to turn the momentum in the second half. Trading baskets in the third period, the Panthers trailed by 10 going into the final stanza. That was when the Mojo defense took over the game.
Pierce and Baty each matched the game-high 12 points, while Calvione Calicutt added 10.

Permian followed the win with a Saturday road trip to Abilene. Paired with Red Oak, a 5A school out of the metroplex area, the Mojo Machine showed no signs of wear. The Panthers pounced the Hawks to an early 22-10 first quarter lead, and then rolled to a 61-47 decision to complete the back-to-back weekend games.
The Black Cats established a 33-17 halftime lead, and duplicated the same energy for two more quarters. Permian continued to show a softness at the free throw line, making only 6-of-16. Baty led all scorers with 17 points, and Race Herr added another 12 in the road win.
The Panthers will enjoy a brief Thanksgiving break before returning to action on November 28. Permian will meet former District 2-6A foe Amarillo Tascosa on a neutral court at Lubbock Trinity high school on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. tip. The junior varsity is scheduled to play at 1:30 p.m.
