Mojo Outclaws Tigers In Catfight

Odessa, TX – With a backdrop of a full moon and Halloween weekend, the Black Cats of Permian outclawed the visiting Frenship Tigers 36-27 in a tough fought District 2-6A battle at Ratliff Stadium.

The Panthers tried to make a statement early when Terran Limuel took the game’s opening kickoff coast-to-coast for a 98-yard return.  The Tigers were able to counter with a score of their own. The drive took eight plays to cover 61 yards, capped off on a 12-yard run by Ty Glass, to tie the game at 7-7.

After an exchange of punts, Frenship put together a drive that closed out the first stanza and spilled into the second quarter.  The Mojo defense minimized the damage, but the Tigers added a field goal to take their first lead of the game.  Frenship would add a touchdown midway in the period gaining a 10-point advantage.  The Black Cats would cut into the deficit when Cade Tschauner took a reverse to the house from 14 yards out.  The Panthers trailed 17-13 at the intermission.

Permian came out in the second half and surprised Frenship with an onside kick. The Panthers were unable to seize the moment and the Tigers took over near midfield after a short punt. That would result in an 8-play scoring drive to extend the Frenship lead to 11 points.

On the next play from scrimmage, Harper Terry connected with Shy Stephens-Deary on a 79-yard catch and run to keep Mojo in striking distance.  After a field goal by the Tigers, Terry unleashed another long pass – this time a 78-yard pass to a wide open Limuel to knot the game at 27-27.

Momentum favored the Panthers as the fourth quarter got underway.  The Mojo defense forced Frenship to open the final 12 minutes with a punt to the Permian 45.  It took all of eight plays for Permian to regain the lead with 7:00 left of the clock.  Andy Castillo bulled his way across the goal line for the 34-27 advantage.

The Tigers still had life and started the next drive on their own 30.  Frenship moved downfield on six consecutive run lays down to the Mojo 30.  Approaching the redzone, the Tigers fumbled the ball and the Panthers recovered on the 35 to dash Frenship’s hopes of a possible tie with just 4:35 remaining.

After coming up empty on the ensuing drive, the Panthers were able to secure the win when Drake Womack nailed the Frenship quarterback in the endzone for the safety with a minute to play in the game.

Stephens-Deary finished the night with 116 yard receiving from three catches, while Limuel had two receptions for 74 yards.  Castillo rushed for 65 yards on 11 carries, and Terry recorded 58 ground yards and threw for 183.

The annual Crosstown Showdown between Permian and Odessa High is on tap for next Friday at Ratliff Stadium.  Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
