Odessa, TX – The Permian Boys cross country team continues to dominate, winning their fourth consecutive first place finish of 2020. The Panthers claimed top honors today in the District 2-6A Championship Meet held at UTPB and now qualify for Regionals.
Mojo led the boys group with 46 points. Abilene High followed with 70, and Odessa High took third with 73. In the Girls division, San Angelo Central won with 48 points. Frenship (70) and Abilene High (72) finished ahead of fourth place Permian (82).
The Mojo Boys rocked it behind junior captain Christian Chavez (16:08.97). Junior Andy Sotelo finished in sixth, followed by junior Adriel Hinojos (11th), freshman Elyjah Conwright (13th), and sophomore William Zamarano (15th). Junior captain Raeley Howard (20:19.00) and sophomore Kendall Mathis (20:43.72) also qualified for the Region I Meet on the Girls side, finishing in second and fourth place respectively.
We caught up with head coach Darchelle Welch after the meet results were posted. It was obvious that she was excited for the Permian runners and their achievements this year. “I am very proud of these kids and all the hard work they’ve put in!”, according to Welch. “They have put in all the extra miles and it’s paid off. From Day One, we’ve been practicing with winning in mind. We have set goals, and have crushed them… and we aren’t done yet.”
Welch continued, “Today alone, 90 percent of our runners PR’ed with new 5K personal bests. They are a dedicated and motivated group. We are enjoying our victories today, and looking forward to the coming weeks. Keep an eye on that MOJO Magic!”
The Permian cross country team is a young team, comprised of only has three seniors with the majority being underclassmen. There is a very bright future here as Mojo begins the second season. What may be lacking in experience is definitely being compensated with energy, attitude, and enthusiasm.
The Regional Meet will be held in Lubbock on November 10 at Mae Simmons Park.
