Wolfforth, TX – Following back-to-back non-district wins, the Permian girls basketball team hit the road to open the district games. After falling behind to Frenship 20-11, the Lady Panthers were unable to keep pace in a 89-37 road loss.
Junior guard Karen Guzman led Mojo with 13 points in the losing effort. The Lady Tigers had three players posting double-digit numbers, with Kaylee Rendon topping all scorers with 21 points.
Permian got off to a sluggish start but settled in midway into the opening frame. By quarter’s end, the Lady Panthers trailed by nine at 20-11. Mojo dealt with a multitude of mistakes, including difficulty getting the inbound passes to players in the same colored jerseys.
In the second quarter, Frenship converted over a handful of rebounds into put-back points. Neither the perimeter nor free throw shots would fall for Permian as they fell behind even further to trail 42-21 at the halftime break.
The second half continued to be unkind to the visiting Lady Panthers. The Lady Tigers scored 47 points to Mojo’s 16 in the game’s last 16 minutes. It should also be noted, there’s a positive Permian can take away from the game that does not show up on the scoreboard. The team played with heart – from the opening tip-off to the final buzzer. That can become a very contagious strength with several district games still ahead.
The Lady Panthers will be back on the court next Tuesday for the district home opener against Midland High. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. at the PHS Fieldhouse.
