MIDLAND, TX – After leading 33-27 after three quarters, Permian’s girls basketball team was forced into overtime in Friday’s district match-up with Midland High. The Lady Dawgs tied the game in regulation and squeaked out a 49-45 overtime win over the Lady Panthers in the Bulldog Gym.
Senior post Daysia Christian scored a pair of baskets in each of the regulation quarters to have the Lady Panthers lead most of the game. Late in the fourth quarter, Permian watch the Lady Dawgs chip away at the deficit.
Mojo held a six-point lead with 1:33 to play when Jae Savage stole the ball and completed the effort with a transition layup. Midland came right back with a basket of their own to stay in striking distance, and the Lady Dawgs tied the game at 41-41 with under 30 seconds remaining. That’s how the fourth stanza would end.
In the overtime period, Midland took the lead on a 3-pointer to up the ante to 44-41 with 3:39 to play. Permian was able to add four, but couldn’t regain the lead and had to adsorb the overtime loss.
In the opening frame, Christian scored twice with additional buckets being scored by Savage, Nodia Cooper, and Karen Guzman for Mojo’s first quarter points. Midland High accumulated 11 to possess a one-point lead. The Lady Panthers regained the lead with a 14-point second quarter led by Christian. At the intermission, Permian was up 24-20.
The second half started with a heavy dose of Mojo defense. The Lady Panthers limited the Lady Dawgs to seven points through the third quarter. Permian extended its lead to 33-27 as the district contest entered the final eight minutes. Late in the fourth quarter, Midland made its push to force the extra period.
Christian led all scorers with 19 points, nine rebounds, and four steals. Guzman recorded 11 points in the tough-fought loss, while Savage finished with eight. The Lady Panthers will host crosstown rival Odessa High on Tuesday at the Permian Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
