Lubbock, TX – Coming fresh off the first place trail of the Odessa Invitational, the Mojo Boys cross country team collected more gold today at the Lubbock Christian Chap Invitational. The Permian Girls shared the top spot with Frenship, but finished in second after the tiebreaker.
In the Boys division, the Panthers led the pack with 51 points. That topped Odessa High’s 58, Frenship’s 64, and Lubbock High’s 65. In the Girls group, Permian and Frenship each finished with 48 points. With a total of 73 points, Odessa High took third place – 25 points behind the leaders.
Mojo placed two runners in the Top 10 of each group. Christian Chavez (16:33.70) finished in third, and Adriel Hinojos (17:41.10) placed tenth in the Boys competition. Raeley Howard (20:56.20) and Kendall Mathis (21:12.30) claimed second and third place respectively in the Girls group.
Head coach Darchelle Welch said after the meet, “We raced at 90 percent today. Right now our training focus is putting all of the pieces of the 5k race together so that the ‘comfort zone’ and ‘critical zone’ reach homeostasis with each of the runners. For my team, October is the time of racing in big invitationals and preparing for the District Championship.”
Welch says it is quite a balancing act maintaining an edge right now, while also meeting each individual’s needs. “I feel I’ve gotten to know my athletes and what works for them. This helps me maximize their potential. Each week we get closer to reaching 100 percent maximum potential. I can’t wait for that breakout moment when we bring the complete 5K package together.” She concluded saying, “Keep your eyes on Permian. We’re not done showing you what we are made of.”
The tour continues next Thursday with the Abilene Invitational at Sherrod Park. The District Championship meet will follow on October 29… Black Cat Halloween weekend.
