Permian Knocks Off Midland Lee

Midland, TX – The Mojo Machine utilized a strong second quarter as Permian grabbed a quick 35-21 halftime lead en route to a 59-45 district victory over Midland Lee in the Rebel Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

The Panthers will chalk up the outcome as a win, but it wasn’t the prettiest or strongest effort head coach Tim Thomas has seen this season.  As best described by Coach Thomas, “These types of games force you to improve.  But, I am proud of our guys for persevering.”

It became evident early that the Mojo Machine was running maybe a little lean.  Cedric Baty and Tremayne Baty contributed to Permian taking an 8-0 lead before Lee was able to get on the board.  The Rebels made a trey midway into the quarter to break the silence, but trailed by four by period’s end.

Shy Stephens-Deary, who finished the evening with a game-high 22 points, took charge in the second frame and pumped in five baskets to lead a Black Cat 24-point quarter.  It would include the Panthers going on a 11-point run before the Rebels could slow the bleeding.  The Mojo Machine enjoyed a 35-21 lead at the intermission.

Lee put forth its best effort in the third stanza and was able to narrow the difference to nine points.  The Panthers wouldn’t allow the Rebels to get any closer.  Race Herr hammered in a pair of perimeter three’s to reestablish a 48-31 Permian lead in the third quarter.  The sophomore finished the evening with eight points.

Stephens-Deary led the fourth quarter charge, scoring nine of the 11 points in the final period for the Black Cats.  The Rebels managed to answer with back-to-back treys, but it was too little to late.  Ben Saldivar was responsible for the other two Permian points, making both of his free throws, for the 59-45 win.

The Mojo Machine improves its district record to 4-0, while the Rebels fall to 1-4.  The Panthers will be on the road again this Friday as they travel to Abilene High (3-1) for another district battle.  The Eagles defeated San Angelo Central tonight 76-52.
