San Angelo, TX – Much like the meeting on January 5, the Panthers came out the better cats in the second district meeting with the Bobcats. Permian jumped out to a 37-24 halftime lead, and extended the deficit to claim of 67-48 victory over San Angelo Central on Friday in the Babe Didrikson Gym.
Just as in the first game, Shy Stephens-Deary played featured point guard again this evening and racked up an impressive game-high 29 points in the winning effort. Race Herr also turned in a solid performance, dropping another 16 points through the cylinder for the Mojo Machine.
Permian opened the contest with a quick 9-0 run before Central answered with a 7-0 run of their own. Deary and Herr accounted for 16 of the 20 first quarter points to give the Black Cats a 20-14 lead. The back-and-forth affair began to lean in more in the Panthers’ direction in the second stanza. Permian took advantage of numerous missed shots by the Bobcats to extend the lead to 37-24.
Coming out of the intermission, shooting was off the mark for both teams during several trips up and down the court. Central eventually narrowed the gap to 10 points midway into the third frame, but failed to get any closer. By the end of the period, the visiting Black Cats now owned a 50-33 edge.
Calvione Calicutt and Cedric Baty out-hustled the Bobcats to the ball following many of the missed shots. The pair collected five rebounds each, and Baty was responsible for seven assists. Tremayne Baty also recorded four assists.
Permian had no problem putting the game away in the final eight minutes to cruise to a 67-48 road win. The Mojo Machine (8-1, 16-4) will take a break next Tuesday and then pick up district action on Friday, playing host to Midland Lee (2-7, 8-8) at the Permian Fieldhouse.
