Cats Send Dawgs Back To House

Odessa, TX – Permian chalked up another District 2-6A win after disposing of Midland High 66-49 on Tuesday evening in the PHS Fieldhouse.

The Mojo Machine utilized a three-prong attack, consisting of Race Herr, Shy Stephens-Deary, and Zay Pierce.  Herr recorded four treys in his team-high 17 points.  Deary turned in a 16-point performance, while Pierce followed with 12.

While the Panthers lost some focus in the third quarter, head coach Tim Thomas acknowledged some inconsistent play but partially understands.  “We have been inconsistent over the past few games which, is somewhat understandable, given everything our country is going through right now. We are still trying to build and be at our top performance level and peaking at the end of district.”

Permian opened up a 16-0 lead before Midland High could even get a bucket to fall with 1:21 remaining in the opening period.  Part of that early trek came from a pair of perimeter three’s by Pierce to help build a quick 18-5 first quarter lead. Point guards Cedric Baty and Tremayne Baty joined the party in the second frame to push the Black Cats’ lead to 37-15 at the intermission.

The Mojo Machine spit-and-sputtered through the third period, only scoring nine points while Midland High added 16 to narrow the deficit to a 46-31 ballgame.  The Bulldogs’ momentum shift and success would be short lived.  In the fourth quarter, the Black Cats looked more themselves and produced 20 points in the final eight minutes of the winning effort.  Cedric Baty donated nine of the 14 Mojo assists.  He also came up with six defensive boards, while Calvione Calicutt collected another four rebounds.

In the early game, the junior varsity Panthers picked up a 66-60 win over the Bulldog JV.  Permian (15-4, 7-1) will take a bus ride down to the Concho Valley for a date with San Angelo Central (15-6, 4-3) on Friday.  The district match-up is set for a 6:30 p.m. tip.  The Bobcats beat Midland High 60-53 in their last outing and had an open date this evening.
