Amarillo, TX – The long road trip to the Texas Panhandle resulted in Permian erasing a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to claim a 13-12 victory over Amarillo Tascosa on Friday night at Dick Bivins Stadium.
The opening frame was a test of might as both defenses dictated the first 12 minutes… and much of the game. After a scoreless first quarter, Tascosa broke the silence by converting a Permian turnover midway into the second stanza. A 23-yard touchdown pass gave the Rebels a 6-0 advantage that would carry into the intermission.
Just nine seconds into the third quarter, Tascosa uncorked a 75-yard TD strike to extend the lead to 12-0. While the Mojo defense took over from there, the Rebel defense made it difficult for the Black Cats to make any headway the remainder of the period.
The Permian offense began to move the ball early in the fourth quarter. The Panthers manufactured a 72-yard scoring drive, capped off with Juzstyce Lara reaching paydirt on a short TD run to cut the deficit to 12-7. Following a three-and-out by the Rebels, Mojo put together a game-winning drive that consisted of a 78-yard scoring drive that knocked over five minutes off of the clock. Facing third down on the 9-yard line, Rodney Hall connected with JaQuan Richardson for the go-ahead touchdown to give the Cats a 13-12 lead.
With a little over a minute and some change remaining, Tascosa squandered its last hope of answering. The Rebels failed to secure the ensuing kickoff as Mojo recovered the live ball. Victory formation followed to end the contest with the Black Cats ahead by a point. Permian will be back at Ratliff Stadium next Friday as the Panthers host undefeated Harker Heights in a non-district clash.
