Mojo Machine Ambushes Lee Rebels

Odessa, TX – The Mojo Machine administered a good ol’ Rebel ambush on Friday night in the Permian Fieldhouse.  The Panthers started strong and finished strong in a 81-34 throttling of Midland Lee to improve to 9-1 in district.

Shy Stephens-Deary led all scorers with a 31-point effort, while Race Herr backed that up with another 17.  Permian logged in another solid defensive performance, limiting the Rebels to single-digit numbers in two of the four quarters.

“We are focusing on improving each day. If we can all improve half a percent individually, our team improves six percent. We played one of, if not the best, game this year”, according to head coach Tim Thomas. “We want to be on a steady incline moving up to try to be peaking as a team as the end of the season approaches.”

The Rebels opened the game taking a brief 5-2 lead before watching the Panthers respond with a 13-5 run.  Taking control of the tempo and momentum of the contest, Permian finished the first quarter sitting on an 18-12 lead.  Stephens-Deary accounted for 14 of those points, including dropping three treys through the cylinder.

Lee fell prey to the Mojo Machine in the second frame, managing to add a whopping single basket in the eight minute span.  Scoring for Permian was more evenly spread, with Cedric Baty, Tremayne Baty, and Zay Pierce each getting marks in the scorebook.  The 17-2 second quarter would afford the Panthers to enjoy a 35-14 halftime lead.

Cedric Baty was credited with five assists and four steals.  Kyson Moreno and Tremayne Baty donated three assists each.  Stephens-Deary collected seven rebounds, and Calvione Calicutt nabbed another six boards.

The second half didn’t fare much better for the visiting Rebels as the Black Cats would double Lee’s output at 52-26 by the end of the third period.  Stephens-Deary was responsible for nine of Permian’s 17 points in the quarter.  Herr led production in the final stanza with another 10 points, and Ben Salvidar lit it up with eight points for an 81-34 lopsided decision.

The Mojo Machine (9-1, 17-4) will return to the PHS Fieldhouse next Tuesday to host Abilene High (6-4, 17-6) for Senior night, followed by the much anticipated rematch with Frenship (10-0, 19-4) in Wolfforth on Friday.
