Mojo Opens With Win Over Cooper

Odessa, TX – Abilene Cooper scored on the game’s first two possessions, but Permian answered with five consecutive touchdowns – three off Cougar turnovers – to claim a 47-35 non-district win in the season home opener at Ratliff Stadium.

Cooper threw touchdown passes of 62 and 84 yards to jump out to a 14-0 lead with 8:15 left in the first quarter. Permian cashed three turnovers into 20 points to turn the momentum of the game back into Mojo’s favor. Tristan Johnson powered in from a yard out midway into the first quarter and then the Panthers defense stepped up. Linebacker Amarion Garrett made a leaping interception and returned it 27-yard for the touchdown to cut the Panthers’ deficit to 14-13.  Shy Stephens-Deary hauled in a 29-yard pass to give the Panthers a 20-14 lead to close out the opening quarter.

The defense gave Mojo a second quarter lead they would not relinquish the remainder of the game. The Cougar quarterback threw another interception, with Bryce Woody returning it 26 yards for a score. A fumble recovery by Garrett late in the period was returned 24 yards for a 34-14 Permian lead. An exchange of touchdown runs left the Panthers sitting on a 41-21 halftime advantage.

After a scoreless third frame, Cooper tightened the contest on a 30-yard run to paydirt to trail by 13.  Permian answered midway into the final stanza when Lucas Salazar ripped off his own large-gainer of 31 yards.  The Cougars managed to add one more score, but it was too little too late as they failed to make up for the second quarter turnovers.  Permian was able to maintain the two-score lead.

Garrett accounted for two defensive scores in the Panthers’ win.  Terran Limuel led Mojo rushers with 89 yards from eight carries, while Stephens-Deary added another 80 yards from five receptions.
