ODESSA, TX – In a game decided early, Amarillo Tascosa jumped out to a 42-14 halftime lead and cruised to a 85-32 win on Friday in the Permian Fieldhouse. The Lady Panthers were unable to overcome turnovers in the District 2-6A loss.
While the Permian girls made a valiant effort to get back into the game in third quarter, Tascosa kept the pressure on and refused to allow the Lady Black Cats much success. Junior forward Jennifer Arnold scored six points in the quarter, but it was an uphill battle from the start.
Daysia Christian was top scorer for Permian and finished the evening with nine points, while Karen Guzman had eight. The Lady Rebels had three scorers hit double figures.
The opening frame was marred with fouls… a total of 18 between the two teams. Tascosa scored the game’s first 10 points before Christian added a lay-up to get the Lady Panthers on the board. Mojo added five points from free throws from Christian, Guzman, and Natalie Baeza. By the end of the quarter, the visitors owned a 27-11 lead.
Turnovers and missed shots hampered the Lady Panthers in the second period. The Permian offense failed to produce a single basket while being held a three points in the quarter – all from free throws. Meanwhile, the Lady Rebels added another 25 points to take a 52-14 halftime lead. A total of 29 fouls were committed in the first half.
The Lady Black Cats had their best effort in the third quarter, scoring 11 points. Permian continued to struggle with Tascosa’s full-court press. The Lady Rebels extended their lead to 69-25 to close out the third stanza. Guzman and Camila Leal each added a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, while Tascosa added another 16 points for the 85-32 final.
On a positive note, the Permian JV fared much better and claimed a 61-59 victory. The Lady Panthers have reached the halfway point in District 2-6A. Mojo will host Frenship at the PHS Fieldhouse to start the second half of district. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
