Odessa, TX – An extended weather delay wasn’t enough to disrupt the Mojo mission on Friday night as Permian sent Mesquite Poteet back to the Metroplex with a 49-14 lashing from Ratliff Stadium.
Technically, the Pirates won 17-0 over Dallas Spruce this week after ‘The Virus’ forced a forfeit. The Panthers reached tonight’s game after having to reschedule two prior opponents. UANL Mexico had been the original opponent, but had to be rescheduled due to COVID protocols involving the border. Stellar Prep from Hayward, California took the slot for two weeks before also having the scrub the game. Permian and Poteet finalized things on Tuesday.
Tonight’s game wasn’t free of overcoming adversity. The Pirates had to load up and make the long journey across the state, while the Panthers impatiently waited to get the taste of a 40-21 loss to Tascosa out of their mouths. Both teams were also treated to an extended weather delay. In the end, Mojo cranked out plenty of run-based offense and is now ready for the district games that will follow.
Poteet got got off the bus and drew the attention of the Panthers immediately. It took all of two plays for the Pirates to draw first blood on a 67-yard touchdown scamper by Joey Shaw for the early lead. Permian matched that with Tristan Johnson reeling off a 63-yard run to knot the score at 7-7. After driving down to the Mojo 25, the Pirates turned the ball over on downs when they failed to convert a 4th-and-11. The Panthers took possession and answered with an 8-play, 75-yard scoring drive that was capped with a Brian Mahaffey 7-yard run into the endzone for a 14-7 lead to complete the opening quarter.
Quarterback Rodney Hall scored three rushing touchdowns, the first on a 41-yarder in the second quarter. An hour’s worth of weather delay would ensue. When play resumed, the Mojo defense got into the act and Jyzaiyah Solis came up with a pick-six that covered 47 yards the other direction for Permian to sit on a 28-7 lead that would take the teams into halftime.
Hall added his second trip into the endzone after the break for the lone score of the third quarter. Permian enjoyed a comfortable 35-7 lead. Mojo added two more touchdowns in the final stanza, while the Pirates added a one-play 33-yard TD pass.
Hall finished the night with 70 yards rushing and 55 passing. Johnson led the Panthers with 165 ground yards from 10 carries, and Juzstyce Lara added another 128 yards. Mahaffey had seven touches for 62 rushing yards. Each donated a touchdown run. Johnson also had two receptions for 45 yards.
The district run begins next Friday with the Panthers (3-1) hosting Abilene High for homecoming. The Eagles (2-2) claimed a 35-28 decision over Grand Prairie earlier tonight.
