Key Win Over San Angelo Central

Odessa, TX – A strong defensive battle and time consuming drives favored Permian in a 21-7 key District 2-6A victory over San Angelo Central on Senior Night at Ratliff Stadium on Friday.

The Panthers opened the game with a promising drive that landed on the Bobcat 27. The drive stalled when Mojo failed to convert on fourth down just outside the Central redzone. The Angry Orange took full advantage of the turning of momentum with a 10-play, 73-yard scoring drive for the game’s first points midway into the quarter for the lone score in the opening period.  From there, Permian responded with 21 unanswered points the remainder of the game.

Rodney Hall ushered in the second frame by rambling 62 yards downfield, but a fumble on the following play let the Bobcats off of the hook. San Angelo took possession but was unable to cash in on the Mojo miscue after failing to convert a fourth down attempt on the Permian 33. The Panthers immediately went to work and put together a 15-play, 67-yard scoring drive, capped off by a short run by Hall to knot the game at 7-7. Tate Terry would cap off an 8-play, 44-yard drive by adding a 36-yard field goal late in the quarter for Permian to take a 10-7 advantage into the locker room.

Coming out for the second half, Central would go on offense first but the Mojo defense kept the visitors in check.  The Permian offensive unit took the field at ground it out with an 8-play drive that covered 32 yards.  Coming up short of the goal line, the Panthers settled with a 19-yard Terry field goal to push the Central deficit to six points.  Again, the defense would thwart any serious scoring threat and the third quarter ended with Mojo still in front 13-7.

Permian would again rely on the running game to chew away valuable minutes off of the clock.  The Panthers had one more score in their pockets, which consisted of a six minute 14-play drive that covered 69 yards.  Hall would find the endzone on a short dive, and Lucas Salazar hauled in the conversion pass to cap the scoring at 21-7.

Hall led the Permian offense with 118 rushing yards and another 92 yards through the air.  Zach Wheeler had 18 carries for 86 yards.  Brian Mahaffey was recipient of four receptions for 48 yards.  Hall accounted for two touchdowns, while Terry tacked on two field goals in the victory.

The Panthers (4-1, 7-2) will be idle next week.  The much anticipated district finale with Midland Leegacy (4-0, 7-1) will be held on November 5 at Grande Comm Stadium in ‘Mitlan’.  Winner takes it all… and the district title.
