Permian Competes In Harold Green Meet

Odessa, TX – The Permian Girls finished in second place, while the Boys took third in the Harold Green district qualifying compulsory meet held Friday at the Odessa High Gymnasium. Sincere Galindo led the Mojo guys, placing fifth in the All-Around. Isabella Fanucci also had a Top 5 finish in All-Around for the Lady Panthers.

The Harold Green Meet has been hosted by the Ector County ISD since the early 70’s. Originally known as the Odessa Invitational, the meet name was changed in 1998 to honor Mr. Green. He was a former OHS basketball coach and then school district Athletic Director in charge of gymnastics. Green continued to champion the ideal of active young people, and to ensure the future of gymnastics, not only in West Texas, but on a statewide level.

Green has been presented countless awards from the Gymnastics Association of Texas and the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association including: Service to Youth Award, Texas Merit Award for Leadership, and Texas High School Gymnastics Hall of Honor.

In today’s team competition, the Permian Girls finished in second place with a score of 100.85, followed by Odessa High with a 90.30.  The Lady Bobcats came out on top with a score of 116.55.

The Panthers finished in third in the Boys group with a 156.90.  San Anglo Central finish atop the group with 169.00.  The Bronchos were second with a score of 162.80.

Permian gymnastics coach Christopher Soto shared some insight on the progress of this year’s group, “It hasn’t been easy but we are going to get it done. We’ve set the goals and know the path we have to take to be the best team in the region. We have a lot of obstacles to get through – in and out of the gym – but if our focus is on point, we can absolutely be the top team in our region again.”

Soto continued, “We have several new team members and athletes starting new events this year so some scores may still be low. However, if you look at the team standings, this could be anyone’s year to place at the top. Our team has progressed from back-to-back and a Covid rebuilding year. I would say our progress is in good control and can only improve from here! I’m excited and motivated for our boys and girls teams.”

The Mojo gymnasts will get to stay close by as they enter the Martha Mitchell district qualifying optional meet next Thursday at the Permian Gymnastics gym.
