Odessa, TX – After battling through an even first period, Frenship mounted a strong second quarter and went on to claim a 72-45 district victory over the Panthers on Tuesday night in the Permian Fieldhouse.
While the Black Cats enjoyed a 16-14 first quarter lead, the visiting Tigers manipulated the next three. Frenship added 23 points to Permian’s nine in the second stanza to take a 37-25 halftime advantage. Race Herr led the Panthers in scoring, courtesy of three treys, with nine points. Ben Saldivar, Tremayne Baty, and Calvione Calicutt followed, each adding eight points on the night.
Scoring became a premium for Mojo as shots just wouldn’t fall. The Panthers were held to a mere four points in the third quarter, while the Tigers racked up 17 points in the frame and added another 18 in the final eight minutes.
The loss, coupled with Odessa High’s 71-66 loss to San Angelo Central, left the Panthers and Bronchos with matching district records at 8-4. A coin flip this morning determined the final 2-6A seeding, with OHS winning the toss.
As a result, Odessa High will get to host their Bi-District game against El Paso Eastwood, while the Mojo Machine will load up and make the long journey west next Tuesday. Frenship will host El Paso Coronado, and the Bobcats will travel to Americas.
Permian (8-4, 24-8) will now start the second second… the Class 6A state playoffs. The Panthers will be matched up with El Paso Franklin (13-1, 27-4), who are riding a nine-game win streak. The Cougars are not a high scoring team, and rely on their defense to control opponent scoring. Tip is slated for February 22 at 6:00 p.m. MST / 7:00 p.m. CST at the Cougar Gym.
